George
Washington and designer Pierre L’Enfant decided to
locate the Capitol on Jenkins Hill and described the
knoll as "a pedestal waiting for a
monument." On September 18, 1793, Washington
laid the cornerstone, and Congress moved into the
completed north wing of the building in November
1800. During the last 200 years, the Capitol has
been undergoing constant changes. Before the
building was even completed, the British burned the
Capitol on August 24, 1814 during the War of 1812.
Even today, the Capitol is still undergoing change
and will feature a new visitor’s center in 2005.

The
cornerstone for the White House was laid on
October 13, 1792. It quickly became the scene for
many great moments in American history. Yet, it is
more than a museum or an object of historical
interest. Every president since John Adams called
it "home." Plans for the house were
drawn by Irish-born architect James Hoban. He also
supervised its construction and re-construction
after the British burned it in 1814. Generally,
people referred to it as the "President’s
House," or the "President’s
Palace." Early on, though, it became the
"White House" because of the color paint
used to cover the sandstone walls during
construction.
Key
is located on the right side next to the bottom
window in between the tree and the column.

Independence
Hall was constructed between 1732 and 1756 as the
State House of the Province of Pennsylvania, and
was the birthplace of the concept for a United
States of America. It was designed by lawyer,
Andrew Hamilton, and is considered a fine example
of Georgian architecture. In the Assembly Room of
the Hall, the Second Continental Congress
appointed Washington commander-in-chief of the
Continental Army, in 1775. Also in that room, the
Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4,
1776 and the Constitution was written in 1787. The
building has been restored wherever possible to
its original late 18th century appearance.
