Mount Rushmore National Memorial is one of America’s
greatest monuments to freedom and democracy. Rising high in the Black Hills of
South Dakota, the heroic likenesses of four great American presidents –
Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt tell a story of pride and
perseverance. The monument was envisioned in 1923 by Doane Robinson, then
director of South Dakota Historical Society. He called upon the famous sculptor
Gutzon Borglum to bring the patriotic shrine to life. Construction on the
memorial stopped in 1941 when Borglum died. Today, the National Park Service
preserves the monument for the inspiration of future generations.
